The leaders of the Providence Republican Party condemn Democrat City Councilwoman Kat Kerwin, for endorsing vandalism of the statue of Christopher Columbus at Reservoir Ave. and Elmwood Ave.
David Talan and William Ricci, Co-Chairs of the Providence Republican City Committee, said that "Vandalism is never an acceptable expression of free speech."
The GOP leaders added, "Extreme progressives, like Councilwoman Kerwin, fail to recognize that we can not judge 15th century behavior, based on 21st century standards."
Talan added that the Columbus statue has a Providence connection. It was cast by the former Gorham Mfg. Company, located nearby in the Reservoir Triangle neighborhood. (Talan is President of the Reservoir Triangle Neighborhood Association.)
Ricci added, "The statue is intended to recognize contributions of Italians to American society."
The GOP leaders observed that "Extreme progressives, like Councilwoman Kerwin, are totally out of touch with what the Democratic Party used to stand for. Her predecessor on the Council, Terry Hassett, is a patriotic common-sense Democrat, who would never have suggested such a whacky position on the Columbus statue."
